Jason put together the last of his items into the duffel bag, all of the extra stuff that Mrs. Roberts had asked him to pick up for the ceremony. Rain drizzled outside against the windows, but it wasn’t a big deal. The weather report said the rain would ease off around early afternoon. Besides, he had other things to worry about. He still had the flower delivery at two o’clock and if he didn’t pick up the flowers, Mrs. Roberts threatened to pull him from the best man role. Jason chuckled thinking about it and went to the mirror, readjusting his tie for the tenth time that morning.
This wasn’t just any ceremony. It was Michelle’s special day. And Michelle meant everything to Jason. She was his best friend, his childhood pal, his closest companion in the whole world. He couldn’t imagine not being there to support Michelle for her wedding.
A high pitched ringing echoed throughout his apartment, it was probably Michelle calling to remind him of the flower delivery or to freak out at him again. Just a little last minute nerves, Jason knew how to smooth it out. He found his phone nestled between couch cushions and flipped the screen up.
To his surprise, it was Mrs. Roberts calling. He answered the phone, “Mrs. Roberts I promise I’m picking up the flowers-“
“Have you seen Michelle?” She blurted out.
“…your daughter?”
“Yes my daughter you dumbass,” Mrs. Roberts snapped, “We need to get the final touches together.” There was a pause that held in the air before the reveal, “Michelle is missing.”
Jason snapped into movement without thinking twice. “Okay, okay,” He walked back to the entryway and searched through his shelves for his keys, “Where was she seen last? Is she at the chapel already? Main house? Has anyone tried to call her-?”
“Of course I’ve tried to call her! She said she needed a little time to herself. Her phone’s off! Jason. What the hell’s going on?”
Jason took a deep breath and went to his kitchen, dragging out notebook paper and pens from the box in the cabinet, “I have a list of places I think she could be. Promise I’ll call you when I get an update.”
“Jason if you and her are staying in and playing video games I swear to fucking God-“
“Mrs. Roberts I have no idea where she’s at.” Jason scribbled down the last place he could think of and shoved the list in his jacket pocket, “But I’m heading out now.”
Jason ended the call amidst Mrs. Roberts’ protest and shook his head. Where the hell was Michelle? He tossed his keys in the air and caught them, debating on where she’d go if she panicked. He walked out of his kitchen, back to the entry room, and listened to the rain that hit his apartment’s porch in a soft chorus. He had a pretty good feeling where Michelle ended up at. Jason unlocked his front door and pulled it open.
Michelle was standing in front of him, holding up a fist to knock on the door seconds before Jason pulled it open. The two of them stared at each other.
“Hey.”
Jason raised his eyebrows and blinked a few times to see if he was dreaming, “Hey Michelle.” Neither of them said anything, the rain dripped on Michelle and her usual bouncy dark hair was wet, pressed against her skin. A little eye makeup was smeared but nothing the wedding would have demanded, she must have snuck out right before the big preparations. Jason tried again, “Your Mom’s looking for you.”
“Yeah…I…I know,” Michelle wrung her hands together. “I’m sorry.”
Jason shrugged, “Not really me you got to apologize to.”
Michelle shrugged back at him and said matter-of-fact, “Kind of freaking out right now.”
“Elle, you’re going to get me in trouble.”
She reached out for him and hugged him, squeezing his body with every bit of strength her 5’8 frame had. Michelle was cold to the touch, how long had she stayed outside? He rubbed her shoulder with one hand and she murmured, “Jase, the whole thing? It’s a lot and I’m freaking out right now.”
“Elle, come on. I’ve got to take you back.”
She nodded against his shoulder and sighed, “No, I know. I know.”
He pulled away and ruffled her hair. Michelle danced back and swatted his hand away, a smile on her face for the first time since she had arrived there. Jason rolled his eyes and walked back into his apartment. He called back to her over his shoulder, “Let me grab my stuff and we can head off. How’d you escape?”
“Took a Lyft off to the side of the chapel when I was helping with the napkin set up,” Michelle walked with him back to the living room. She helped him put the last of his items in the duffel bag. “Mom had to go talk to the catering company and I stepped out.”
“I bet she loved that.”
“She’s been driving me bananas. Just making me anxious about this whole thing.” Michelle reached for the strap of the duffel bag and Jason nudged her away, throwing the bag over his shoulder.
“Elle, come on,” Jason left his apartment and Michelle followed him, stride in stride but quiet as a mouse. He locked the front door and reached too hot to handle latino izle for her hand. The two of them walked together to his truck in silence. He let go of her hand to open the passenger door for her. Michelle stared up at him with her big brown eyes. Jason stepped beyond her, closer to the car and tossed his bag to the backseat.
“No, I know,” Michelle murmured again, standing in the rain. Jason placed his hand on the small of her back and guided her towards the car.
“Come on baby, we’ve got to head out.”
Jason popped into the car and started the heat up immediately. It was too cold, Michelle was shivering next to him in her flimsy gray jacket. He reached behind the seat and eased out one of his old community college sweatshirts, backing out of the apartment’s allocated parking space at the same time.
Michelle shrugged the sweatshirt on over her jacket but didn’t say anything. Jason glanced over a few times but she was staring out the window, drumming her fingers against the passenger door.
“What’re we listening to Elle? Any favorites you want to hear on your big day?”
Michelle didn’t respond. The radio dipped in and out of reception as they approached the main highway. He’d need to take an upcoming exit for a straight shot to the chapel. Everybody would be there and Mrs. Roberts could get everything back on track.
Jason reached out for her with his right hand and squeezed her thigh. He rubbed her thigh up and down the thin legging fabric. “Sorry you’re cold Elle,” He gave her a soft pat and brought his hand back to the steering wheel.
The merge onto the highway came up to view. Once they’d reach the highway it was a straight shot to the chapel and then all could be right again. He could give Michelle back to Mrs. Roberts and her fiance Alex and to the rest of her life. Jason could give Michelle back to the rest of her life where he knew he’d be a part of but never a main character again.
Jason gripped the steering wheel between clenched fingers and veered off the main merger to the right with a sharp screeching sound. Cars honked behind them, screeching at them as well. “Jason, what the hell?!” Michelle demanded.
The car thumped onto the side road and edged its way into the late morning traffic. “Listen, Elle,” Jason declared into the dashboard before him. “I haven’t eaten anything today and I’m sorry for taking you away from the main celebration. But I’m thinking breakfast at Crumbles?”
He paused for a moment, turning left down the familiar side road to the diner that would definitely be packed for the brunch hour. When he stole a look at Michelle though, she was beaming at him.
“How could you just kidnap me like this,” Michelle giggled, “Can’t believe it.”
“If I remember correctly,” Jason countered, “You came to my place but whatever. I’ll buy you pancakes.”
The two of them could see the diner in its familiar place, nestled between a liquor store and a daycare, the same diner Jason and Michelle had hit once a week in high school. It was the same place they celebrated Jason getting a new management job at the plant, the same place they celebrated Michelle passing her MCAT.
“God, I’ve missed this place,” Michelle whispered as Jason parked the car. “You know…I think I’ve been here hungover more times here than sober.”
“How you feeling right now?”
“Way too sober,” Michelle laughed and tried to open her door. Jason leaned across her and shut it.
“I’ve got to be the one to open your door for your special day Elle, come on. Give me this solid.” Jason left the car and walked around the front of the car to open her door with exaggerated slowness. “M’lady, pancakes, and then we’ll take you back.” Jason promised and held out his pinky. It was a stupid, childhood tradition but it meant everything to the two of them.
Michelle pushed past him and walked up to the front entrance of the diner. Jason hurried in front of her and opened one of the double doors with deep incisions in their wood. He held out his pinky again and repeated, “Pancakes and I’ll take you back.”
“Got you, got you,” Michelle waved her hand at Jason as she strode forward, past the ‘seat yourself’ sign and to one of the plush booths near the back, their favorite booth. The two of them wove past the other tables filled with families and couples crammed together, chatting it up while the rain continued against the wide framed windows at the front.
One of the waitresses yelled at them from the opening of the kitchen, “I’ll help y’all out in a minute!”
Jason waved at her and sat across from Michelle. The two of them pulled the sticky menus from their place next to the salt and pepper containers and the sugar packets. “Let me guess, salted caramel and banana pancakes?”
“You know me almost too well,” Michelle tapped against his menu, “Let me guess, the new cinnamon roll pancakes? What’s your experiment today?”
Jason leaned treason izle back in the booth and folded his menu back up on the table, “I actually came here with Serena last week, before she headed off to New York for the work thing. Already had them. Birthday cake pancakes for me.”
“Tell her I said hi, I haven’t seen her in forever,” Michelle reached across the table and pulled his hands into hers. Her hands were like ice. Jason clasped hers together and rubbed her hands, trying to get her circulation up and running. Michelle said, “I didn’t even know she headed out until I saw it on Facebook. I didn’t even know you brought her here. You didn’t mention it.”
“Elle you’ve been kind of busy.”
Michelle nodded, “I’ve missed you.”
“Missed you too Elle.”
The waitress walked over and placed down the glasses of water that always tasted a little gritty. “Drinks? Drinks? What kind of drinks do y’all want?”
“Black coffee for me.”
“Orange juice,” Michelle passed the menus to the waitress, “And I think we’re ready to order. Salted caramel and banana pancakes for me, just the pancakes please.”
“Elle, come on, can you just get bacon instead of taking mine?”
Michelle rolled her eyes, “What a baby. I’ll take bacon too, as a side.”
“Thanks. I’ll take the birthday pancakes with eggs over easy and a side of bacon.”
The waitress scribbled the last of her notes, smiled at the two of them and walked away. Jason leaned towards Michelle across the table, “You know what that was though? Being an adult. I finally got my own bacon.”
“I’m still taking some.”
“Okay, I finally get some bacon,” Jason chuckled. The two of them caught each other’s eye and broke into heavy laughter. Despite her wet hair and the smeared makeup, she looked gorgeous in that moment. Michelle had the best smile in the world and when she laughed, her dimples popped up, it was a welcome sight.
“Thanks Jase,” Michelle giggled and sipped from the gritty water, “Ugh, why they don’t change the filter, I’ll never know.”
Jason took the glass of water away from her and set it back on the table, “Okay Elle, what’s going on? Did Alex do something?”
“No, Alex is fine,” Michelle sighed, “It’s just been a lot. I’m ready to get married and I love him but I don’t think I’m ready to give up all of…this yet.” She gestured to him and around the booth.
“Elle, I love you. I’m not going anywhere.”
“You know it’s going to change.”
Jason nodded and pushed against the booth, letting his arm rest against the table. “Yeah, I know. It is going to change. But here’s the thing Elle,” Jason resituated himself and took her hands in his, “Elle, you are the brightest, coolest, definitely the most attractive friend I have. I love you, I love everything about you. And I know this is a lot right now but I know you’ve wanted this for a while and you’re going to be the best wife Alex or anybody for that manner could hope for.”
Michelle’s lip puckered out and her eyes grew wide. “Love you too Jase.”
“Wow, I don’t even get a fake compliment?”
Michelle pulled her hands away and erupted in laughter, “Listen, listen, I’ll tell you whatever you want to hear.”
“That’s even worse. I take it all back.”
“Listen, listen. I’m glad it was you when we had all those morning after keggers hangover breakfasts here. Remember when I still had vomit in my hair and we didn’t even realize it until after we paid the check?”
“We hosed it off at my Mom’s place.”
“Remember the pregnancy scare and how we drank all those goddamn mimosas when it turned out to be a false positive? Or when you worked thirty hours straight and ate like seven plates of eggs and passed out in my car?”
“I try not to, I really do,” The two of them tried to stifle the laughter but it was useless, all of the memories kept bubbling up.
The waitress came over and dropped off the two breakfast plates. Michelle inhaled hers, scratching her knife into the plate and downing them with blueberry syrup. Jason took his time, cutting into each piece and watching Michelle. This would be one of the last times they’d get to do this for a while, he knew that deep in his heart.
“So here’s the plan,” Jason held up his half-empty mug of coffee, “Here’s the plan. We bumble around for a bit, eat pancakes, I’m thinking head to the art museum over at Southside, and I drop you off with your Mom with the two o’clock flower delivery.”
Michelle held up the glass of orange juice and the two of them clinked glasses, “Sounds beautiful.”
The waitress walked over, picked up their plates and Jason’s credit card. When she was out of earshot Jason whipped out his phone and dialed Mrs. Roberts. Michelle’s eyebrows shot up when she realized what he was doing.
“Jason? Jason?”
“Hey Mrs. Roberts, listen, I’ve found Elle-.”
“Oh thank God-.”
“But here’s the thing, I’m bringing her with the two o’clock flower delivery. Promise I’ll have her there at two,” true detective izle Jason reached out with his pinky and Michelle finished the pinky promise.
“You WHAT? Jason what the hell, no you will not, we’ve been planning this for-.”
“Thanks Mrs. Roberts!” With that Jason ended the phone call. Michelle’s mouth fell open and Jason tried not to think about the consequences of his actions. The two of them stared at each other, motionless before Michelle roared with laughter.
“Jason! Jason I can’t believe you did that oh my god!”
“Your Mom’s gonna kick my ass.”
The waitress dropped off the credit card and the receipt. She told them, “Y’all are the cutest couple I’ve ever seen,” and the two of them waved it off with thanks. Jason scratched a 25% tip and left with Michelle, hand in hand, laughing loud enough for the other customers to notice. He opened the door and she curtsied before walking through.
“My Mom’s going to beat you to death at the altar.”
“It’ll be a wedding and a show.”
He opened the car door for her and closed it behind her. He walked back over to the driver’s side and saw she was still laughing in the passenger seat, her hands over her mouth and her other hand clutching the side of the door. Her dimples were so cute, he couldn’t stop looking at them. He was going to miss all of this, that beautiful, dark hair, those brown eyes with flecks of gold and green, and those dimples.
In the car, Jason cranked up the music and pressed a few buttons to get the bluetooth working. He picked up his phone and browsed over songs, trying to find one of her favorites. He held up his phone, “Okay, Elle, what are we listening to?”
Michelle didn’t respond. He looked up to see her staring at him from the passenger seat. Michelle pushed away from her spot tilted against the door and moved herself until she was inches away from his face.
She looked into his eyes and around his face, like she was trying to search for something. What was she looking for?
Jason swallowed and the movement was too loud in the too small space of his truck. Michelle curved up and kissed his cheek with the soft, delicate lips he’d kiss a few times before when they were young and didn’t know themselves better.
“Elle-” He started but she placed her right hand on the side of his face and brought him down to her, she kissed him then. She kissed him again and he didn’t move, he wasn’t sure how to react. She worked herself back into her seat and Jason was left breathing heavily, staring at her. His boxers felt warmer and his dick throbbed in his pants. He blinked a few times and pressed himself against the back of his seat, trying to get back into the present and not think about how his dick strained against his jeans.
“Jase, I’m sorry.”
Jason nodded and kept the car in park, “Ah, okay.”
“Jase, I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking.”
“Elle, you’re my best friend,” Jason tried to think about anything but the bulge that throbbed in his pants. Memories of seeing her undress at his place, the times they went swimming together, and the few times they fucked in her car when they didn’t know each other better resurfaced in his thoughts.
“I’m sorry.”
“I’d never want to hurt you Elle,” Jason muttered. “I really like Alex, he’s good for you.”
“He is.” Michelle touched Jason’s arm and his dick jumped in his boxers. “I’d never want to you hurt you or Serena. I just…I just wanted to think about something else for a minute. Before I really settle down.”
“Oh God, yeah, Serena.”
Michelle paused and asked, “Are you upset with me?”
“Honestly?” Jason groaned, “I’m trying to think of anything to get rid of this boner.”
Michelle giggled next to him, “High school math class again, remember that?”
“God, Michelle. I try not to. Okay, art museum?”
“Sounds good, sounds good.” Michelle buckled in her seatbelt and Jason backed out of the parking spot. They drove to Southside in silence but the city bustled with life around them. The awkwardness faded away and they were laughing and joking again minutes later. Jason wouldn’t let something like a blunder like that upset Michelle’s big day.
They parked on the outskirts of the art museum and made their way inside. The art museum had become one of their favorite hang outs especially since the bartender made the heaviest drinks. Jason paid for two tickets at the entrance and wove the bands in her face, “This wedding is costing me a damn leg today.” He wrapped hers around her wrist and taped it into place.
Michelle laughed, “It’s been costing me a pretty penny too, don’t worry.” She wove her fingers through his and they walked inside, hand in hand like they had so many times before. Jason held up their hands together to show their guard the bright blue admission wristbands and the two of them walked into the sculpture area. “Jase, I appreciate this. I appreciate all of this.”
“I know it’s been a lot Elle. Just want to make you feel better.”
She rubbed her thumb across the back of his hand and leaned up to kiss his cheek a kiss, “Thank you. I know the moment I’m married…I love Alex. It’ll all be so much better. I just needed to get this out of my system before that happens today.”
“Hey, they have a new art installation. It’s one of those boxes that full of cool lights, we should go check it out.”
